The
Pauwels MicroSub was first developed to meet the technical requirements for
rural and small scale suburban underground cable power distribution in France.
In many scenic rural areas the preference is not to have overhead lines
disturbing the enviroment wherever possible. This is particularly true in small
villages and nearby rural schools. The solution is to use underground cables
and MicroSubs. The MicroSub is fitted with HV in-tank full range or current
limiting fuses as standard and a single or 3 phase outgoing fuse distribution
unit. Alternative LV systems include LV circuit breakers or fuse switch units.
HV termination can be by plug in bushings or by conventional dry type cable box
as shown here. The unit shown above was developed with respect to the defined
needs of a major UK utility and their operational systems. Other UK utilities
are also now using this type of unit. The economic case is for this type of substation made very clearly where "monkey up a stick" H pole mounted transformer and pole mounted fuse systems have been used with underground cables to and from them. The MicroSub in the same location is low profile and secure and avoids the impact of the H pole structure on the environment. ![]() The MicroSub, as the name suggests is little bigger than a 3 phase pole mount transformer at approximately 1.1m cube in dimensions and fully metal clad. Double front access doors enable access to the HV connection box and the LV equipment. In the unlikely event of problems with the transformer the ease of installation and handling means that a replacement unit can be quickly fitted to minimise loss of supply for customers and the faulty unit taken away for service off site.
